A revolutionary genetic analysis has examined the remains of over 500 Iron Age people interred at burial sites in Yorkshire, uncovering evidence that their communities were centred around female lineages stretching back as many as nine generations.
The research, conducted by Ian Armit at the University of York and colleagues, focused on individuals linked to the Arras culture who were laid to rest across several hundred years preceding the Roman conquest of Britain in AD 43.
Nearly 400 of the samples originated from Wetwang Slack in the East Riding of Yorkshire, Britain's most extensive known Iron Age cemetery, which saw its peak activity from the fourth to second centuries BC.
The genetic data demonstrates male relatives were frequently missing from these ancestral resting places, the New Scientist reports.
Additional specimens were gathered from neighbouring archaeological locations in the region.
The genetic evidence reveals a pronounced matrilocal arrangement in which females were typically buried alongside close kin such as mothers, whilst this pattern occurred far less frequently amongst males.
Researchers identified specific instances where men who originated at one location fathered offspring at different sites, providing direct confirmation that males relocated whilst females remained at their family homes.
Rachel Pope at the University of Liverpool, who was not part of the research team, described the findings as transformative. "It's revolutionary and will totally change the way we think about the Iron Age," she said.
Whilst matrilocality alone does not definitively establish female governance, it typically correlates with elevated social standing and improved circumstances for women.
Those who depart their birthplace to join a partner's family occupy a more dependent and thus weaker position than those who remain in their ancestral communities.
The analysis identified at least twelve women who bore children with more than one male partner; according to the preprint, this might indicate consecutive monogamous relationships, though it could equally point towards polyandrous arrangements where women maintained simultaneous partnerships with multiple men within the strongly female-centred social framework, a practice some Roman historical accounts attributed to ancient Britons.
One exceptional case emerged where a man produced offspring with both a woman and her daughter, though such instances were rare.
The genetic data shows individuals from identical maternal lineages deliberately avoided reproducing together. Given these communities were small with widespread family connections, such avoidance must have been intentional and grounded in comprehensive awareness of genealogical ties, the study concludes, demonstrating detailed knowledge of maternal affiliations spanning potentially hundreds of years.
The research also uncovered a sustained pattern whereby two distinct maternal clan groups formed repeated unions with one another.
Three individuals interred with chariots at Wetwang Slack — two males and one female — diverged markedly from the broader pattern, exhibiting recurrent close kinship unions.
The study suggests this reproductive strategy concentrated high status, identity and burial privileges within a restricted descent group.
When archaeological evidence is considered alongside the genetic findings, it indicates societies where female rule was possible.
"For Britain, the archaeological evidence supports a more equitable Iron Age than scholars had previously imagined, and some powerful women were certainly part of that," Ms Pope noted, adding that bone injuries now show some women engaged in combat with Rome.
She highlighted that nineteenth-century historians initially accepted matriarchal Iron Age societies before 1880s anthropology imposed patriarchal assumptions.
"Powerful Iron Age women abound in the texts: Onomaris, Boudica, Cartimandua, Celts with their women as judges," Ms Pope said.
The researchers' conclusion emphasises female-line ancestry represented a fundamental organising principle for Arras culture communities, potentially extending across Iron Age Britain more widely.
Ms Pope cautioned regional variation existed in how these societies were structured, with genetic studies suggesting Iron Age populations in south-east England did not follow matrilocal patterns.
Daniel Bradley at Trinity College Dublin, who previously studied around fifty individuals buried in south-west England, praised the work. "It is an excellent paper, closely argued and very rich in data and inference," he said.
Mr Bradley noted his team had observed tendencies for marriage across maternal lineages.
"We did notice a tendency for marriage across [maternal lineages] in our study, but the finding here of a sustained pattern of unions between two different maternal clan groups is really striking. It implies a deep knowledge of family histories—of which maternal social axis one belonged to—and perhaps of an alliance forming between them," he said.
