Championship leader Kimi Antonelli finished outside the points after receiving a five-second time penalty

Charles Leclerc has won the British Grand Prix after Max Verstappen crashed out of the race.

An anti-climactic ending saw the race conclude behind a safety car, with George Russell finishing in P2 and Lewis Hamilton in P3.

Hamilton was on course for a second-place finish, but Ferrari pitted the British driver in anticipation of more racing, only for the grand prix to end behind the safety car.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli's race was significantly disrupted after a technical issue.

The Italian managed to get his car over the line, but had already received a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits, to the youngster's dissatisfaction.

Antonelli and Verstappen will pick up no points from the race, after the Dutchman beached his Red Bull at Stowe.

Before the race could even get going, Fernando Alonso ran into difficulty on turn 10, stopping on the track but got going again, having to catch up with the rest of the pack.

Both Ferraris got off to a great start, overtaking Antonelli at Turn 1 as the Italian struggled at the beginning.

Oscar Piastri was suffering after lap one, with wing damage forcing him into the pits, coming out in 21st ahead of Alex Albon, who was nearly a lap down early doors following a collision with Ollie Bearman.

Albon picked up a 10-second time penalty from the incident, as the Williams driver's race was over before it began.

Back at the top of the grid, Hamilton received a five-second time penalty for a false start.

A minor drop of the clutch by the seven-time world champion, which gave him virtually no advantage, saw him pick up a penalty as he continued to fend off Antonelli.

By lap 11, the Italian had the move done, getting past Hamilton heading into Copse Corner and moving up to second place.

Verstappen started to get his Red Bull moving despite complaining about downshifts in his car as he pursued Russell.

The Dutchman and the British driver got into a fierce battle before Verstappen whizzed into the pits.

A very brief virtual safety car (VSC) was deployed on lap 22 after a rogue umbrella made its way onto the side of the track, with only Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez pitting to gain a small advantage.

Hamilton was called into the pit lane despite the seven-time world champion shouting down the team radio: "My tyres are still good", as Russell overtook his former teammate.

By lap 28, a battle for podium positions began to emerge among Verstappen, Russell and Hamilton, while Antonelli and Leclerc battled for first place.

Hamilton produced a stunning overtake on lap 30 past Russell with a great manoeuvre but used up all his battery, as his former teammate was able to retake P5.

The brilliant battle soon came to an end by lap 35, as Russell picked up a puncture, being forced to pit as Hamilton moved up to P4.

On lap 38, the Ferrari driver passed Verstappen, moving back into the podium places.

Nico Hulkenberg retired from the grand prix moments after the overtake as a VSC was called, with several drivers racing into the pits.

Antonelli's race completely unravelled after a front-left wheel-shield failure, which saw the Italian drop from P2 to P10 as he tried to crawl over the line to score one point.

He was under investigation from the stewards after exceeding track limits while trying to survive in the race, picking up a five-second penalty.

The drama of the race kicked off with just five laps to go, as Verstappen crashed at the last corner, prompting a safety car.

Drivers flooded into the pits as Leclerc and Hamilton came in for soft tyres. Russell boldly stayed out for the safety car, overtaking his former teammate while he was in the pits.

Sir Mo Farah was in position to wave the chequered flag, as fans desperately waited for the safety car to come into the pits.

The safety car never came in, as Leclerc came home to win.

Speaking afterwards, Leclerc said: "It feels incredible. Unfortunately, the end was maybe not the one I would have dreamt of.

"To win after the last few weekends that have been particularly difficult. All the work we put in to try to get the feeling back in the car, felt like I found something yesterday after the Sprint. But I had to confirm it today.

"Today the feeling was back where it needs to be. I'm so incredibly happy."

His teammate Hamilton reflected rather negatively on his race, despite achieving another podium finish.

He said: "Firstly, I have to say congratulations to Charles. Winning this Grand Prix is a great experience, and this is a great result for our team. So congratulations to our team.

"I just didn't have it today. I jumped the start, got a five-second penalty, but Charles had the pace on me today. I struggled with the balance of the car, but I gave it everything, and I'm grateful to be up here."

Hamilton is under investigation for an alleged yellow flag infringement and will visit the stewards.
