The Brentford star broke his arm after England's win against Mexico

Jordan Henderson has had surgery on his broken arm following a bizarre accident during England's World Cup celebrations on Sunday.

The Brentford midfielder underwent the operation at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute after injuring himself in the aftermath of the Three Lions' thrilling 3-2 victory over Mexico.

Henderson took to Instagram to share the positive news with fans.

"Surgery done! Let's get ready for the big one Saturday," the 36-year-old wrote.

He also expressed his gratitude to the medical team who looked after him, specifically thanking the three surgeons who performed the procedure – Dr Kenneth P Unruh, Dr Mark J Winston, and Dr Kirk McCullough.

The injury happened in truly unfortunate circumstances at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium.

Henderson hadn't actually featured in the match itself, but joined his teammates to celebrate with the travelling England supporters afterwards.

As the players gathered in front of fans – something they've done after every win this tournament – Henderson attempted to climb back onto the pitch by jumping over the advertising hoardings.

He tripped and landed awkwardly on his arm, with the situation looking serious enough that he was stretchered away while receiving oxygen.

The midfielder initially stayed in Mexico on the night of the game before travelling back to England's Kansas base for the operation.

It's a real blow for Henderson, who will now miss the rest of the tournament – but he's determined to stick around.

The former Liverpool captain is keen to remain with Thomas Tuchel's squad in Kansas as they gear up for Saturday's quarter-final clash with Norway in Miami.

His presence will still be valuable in terms of leadership, even if he can't take to the pitch.

Henderson's sole appearance at this World Cup came as a substitute in England's 2-0 group stage victory over Panama – a moment that saw him make history as the first England men's player to feature at four World Cups.

Tuchel is reportedly planning to tell his players to avoid hopping over hoardings in future celebrations.
