New AirPods and Apple Watch could be imminent, whispers suggest

The annual September showcase takes place in the Steve Jobs Theatre, a purpose-built venue named after the late co-founder, located on the grounds of Apple's spaceship-like headquarters in California. Apple typically uses this event to unveil its next iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch.

Invitations to the event have been sent out to the media with the tagline Surprise and Shine.

So, expect to see successors to the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, and the ultra-slim iPhone Air.

Whispers from inside the secretive company suggest we'll see improved cameras, faster processors, and new colours from the incoming iPhone 18 models. However, worldwide component shortages could force Apple to increase price tags across the iPhone lineup, following similar hikes for iPad and Mac earlier this summer.

Out of the box, these new handsets will be powered by iOS 27, the next major iteration of Apple's mobile operating system, which brings a ground-up redesign of Siri ...unless you live in the European Union.

This Apple Event will be the first under the tenure of John Ternus, who takes over as Apple Chief Executive on September 1. He currently serves as Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, overseeing teams worldwide that design and build all of the $4.5tn company's devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, AirPods, and Apple Vision Pro.

CEO Tim Cook, who has led Apple since mid-2011, will become executive chairman of Apple's board of directors. When the succession plan was announced, incoming Chief Executive John Ternus said: "I am profoundly grateful for this opportunity to carry Apple’s mission forward. Having spent almost my entire career at Apple, I have been lucky to have worked under Steve Jobs and to have had Tim Cook as my mentor.

"It has been a privilege to help shape the products and experiences that have changed so much of how we interact with the world and with one another. I am filled with optimism about what we can achieve in the years to come, and I am so happy to know that the most talented people on earth are here at Apple, determined to be part of something bigger than any one of us. I am humbled to step into this role, and I promise to lead with the values and vision that have come to define this special place for half a century."
