Ninja recently announced its first-ever air fryer microwave, but it's not the first brand to come up with the concept.

Salter has had its own version available in the UK for the last couple of years — DuoWave 2-in-1 air fryer and microwave.

These clever appliances combine two of the most-used countertop tools into a single unit, giving you crispy air-fried results alongside traditional microwave speed. It's as if your oven, air fryer, and microwave were rolled into one neat package.

The British housewares brand said in a statement: "As more brands enter the category, Salter remains focused on delivering value and reliable products that make everyday life that little bit easier."

And Salter's very own is now on sale for £187.99 — was £214.99. Ninja's model — the Ninja Crispi Microwave — has yet to make its way to the UK. Priced at £349.99 on its website, it's already listed as much more expensive for when it does arrive.

However, if you don't want to wait for Ninja's version to land or pay quite that much money, Salter could be a worthy alternative.

The Salter DuoWave Air Fryer Microwave Oven could help cut energy use while saving valuable countertop space. Combining an air fryer, microwave, and combi oven in one appliance, it offers a generous 26-litre capacity and 10 preset cooking modes. From crispy chips and pizza to vegetables, fish and even a whole roast chicken, it's designed to cook family meals using little to no oil.

Despite the models both looking like standard microwaves, they prepare meals with air-frying elements, just like you'd find in each of the brands' standard air fryers.

The Salter DuoWave offers a 26-litre capacity that is generous enough to fit a whole roast chicken inside, and you can cook with little to no oil for healthier meals.

There are 10 handy air fry presets built in — covering everything from chips and pizza to fish, soup and popcorn — so getting tailored results is meant to be as simple as pressing a button. A top-down heating element is also designed to deliver that crispy finish every time.

At just 45 D x 52.3 W x 30 H cm, it won't take up your worktop either.

Ninja's Crispi Microwave is the brand's debut countertop microwave, and its standout feature is something called FusionCrisp Technology — essentially, the appliance begins by microwaving your food, then automatically switches to superheated cyclonic air reaching up to 232°C to deliver a crispy finish.

It measures in at 51.05 cm W × 36.83 cm H × 39.37 cm D, which stands slightly taller than Salter's version.

It has a slight edge over Salter when it comes to cooking presets. The model boasts 14-in-1 cooking modes — including eight microwave presets and five air fryer presets to defrost, crisp, air bake, and more.

The company says you can go from frozen to crunchy in roughly 10 minutes.

It also introduces non-toxic CleanCrisp glass cooking to the microwave category for the first time — a 5.5-quart glass basket.

Instead of a turntable, Ninja opted for a flatbed design that provides 40% more usable cooking surface, making it suitable for feeding eight to 10 people.

Salter, on the other hand, offers a wired rack, metal tray, and a turntable for your choice in cooking style.

So which one should you go for? It really comes down to what matters most to you.

The Salter DuoWave allows you to pay less than half the price, getting a roomy 26-litre capacity and 10 air fry presets that cover just about every meal you'd want to make.

However, the Ninja Crispi Microwave is built with its FusionCrisp Technology, non-toxic glass cooking, and flatbed design, which Salter doesn't offer.
