If you've ever found yourself endlessly scrolling through a WhatsApp conversation trying to track down one specific message, a fix is on the horizon.
Right now, finding a message inside a WhatsApp chat on iPhone is a bit difficult. You have to tap the contact or group name at the top of the screen, which takes you to a separate chat info page. From there, you hit the search option, which then drops you back into the conversation with search mode switched on.
While it works, it's a bit clunky and pulls you away from the chat entirely before you can even start looking.
But the Meta-owned chat app appears to be building a handy new search shortcut for iPhone users that could make hunting for old messages far less painful, as spotted by WhatsApp tracker WABetaInfo.
It looks like a search button pops up at the bottom of your chat screen whenever you scroll upwards through older messages. One tap, and you're straight into search mode — no need to leave the conversation already on your screen.
This is similar to what the existing "jump to latest message" button already does. When you scroll back down, WABetaInfo says it vanishes again.
If you have years of chats stored on WhatsApp, important bits of information — addresses, payment details, travel plans, shared files — can easily get lost beneath thousands of newer messages. Having a search button appear at the exact moment you're already browsing through old messages makes a feature like this feel very useful.
It's also worth noting that WhatsApp has been on a bit of a search improvement spree on iOS lately. The company rolled out the ability to search older posts within Channels back in June, and it's been testing redesigned search filters along with a recent-searches section in the Chats tab. This latest shortcut fits neatly into that broader push to make finding things on the app quicker and less fiddly.
However, the in-chat search button appears to still be in the development stage and hasn't actually been switched on for early testers. WABetaInfo found evidence of it in the code, but nobody can use it at this stage. This means we could be waiting for this new feature to roll out for a while.
And there's no hint indicating that Android will also be treated to this streamlined feature.
WhatsApp also hasn't confirmed when — or even if — the feature will roll out to the public. As with plenty of tools spotted during the app's development process, many things could change before an official release.
