Britons have been urged to check their travel documents as nearly a million UK passports are on the verge of expiring.

New research used HM Passport Office data to find 992,577 UK adult passports are set to run out before the end of 2026.

As millions of holidaymakers gear up for summer getaways, autumn city breaks, and festive trips abroad, Wizz Air, who compiled the research, urges travellers to check their passports sooner rather than later.

Passports expiring in 2026 are likely to cause summer holiday chaos, as many popular holiday spots won't let you in with less than three to six months left.

So even if your passport does not expire until the end of the year, it is possible to be turned away at the gate if jetting off in the coming weeks.

Managing director of Wizz Air UK, Yvonne Moynihan, said: "The build-up to a holiday should be about looking forward to your trip, not worrying about your passport.

"Taking a couple of minutes to check its validity when you book can give you peace of mind and help ensure you're ready to travel when the time comes.

"Whether you're planning some late summer sun in Greece, an autumn city break to Valencia or a getaway to one of Europe's famous Christmas markets, we're encouraging our customers to check their passports now and get ahead of their renewal date, so they can focus on enjoying their next adventure."

This comes as Wizz Air announced new routes will go to an emerging European destination with a "fascinating history and vibrant culture".

The budget airline has unveiled a brand-new year-round service connecting London Gatwick with Moldova's capital, Chișinău.

The route kicks off on October 25, 2026, with flights departing four times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

It recently rolled out new routes to Armenia, marking the first direct flight between the UK and Yerevan.
