The dog was saved from the Envigo breeding facility when it was closed down in 2022

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's dog, Mamma Mia, has been celebrated in new footage from the Beagle Freedom Project.

Affectionately known as "Mia", the dog was saved from the Envigo breeding facility when it was closed down in 2022. The facility had been linked to the animal testing industry.

"This is Mamma Mia. She was rescued from the animal testing industry when the Envigo breeding facility was shut down in 2022," the organisation states in the clip.

"Not only is she resilient, but now she's royal. Her incredible rescue story captured the hearts of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle."

Archive footage in the video shows Mia surrounded by a litter of puppies prior to her adoption.

The beagle stole the show in a video the duchess shared to mark her 45th birthday earlier this week.

In the light-hearted clip, Meghan and Harry can be seen dancing together in their kitchen as Mia rolls about on the floor.

Their black Labrador, Pula, added to the moment by carrying her own party hat around in her mouth.

"Oh dear," the duke can be heard remarking as the couple dissolve into laughter at their pets' antics.

According to the BFP's video, Mia was sporting a silver party hat for the birthday festivities.

"Four years later, Mamma Mia is wearing a silver party hat and being silly with her loving forever family celebrating her mom's birthday, and they lived happily ever after," the organisation said.

The adoption came about after Meghan personally telephoned BFP founder and president Shannon Keith to express her desire to take Mia home.

The couple subsequently visited the organisation's headquarters, where they spent time playing with Mia and her puppies in the garden.

Mrs Keith later recounted the experience to the L.A. Times, revealing that the duchess was resolute in her preference for an older dog rather than one of the young pups.

"The duchess is holding Mia and was like, 'We're adopting her'," Mrs Keith recalled. "She was like, 'No, we don't want a Christmas puppy – we want ones we can help who are older.'"

Mia became the third dog in the Sussex household, joining Pula and Meghan's earlier rescue beagle, Guy, who passed away in January 2025.

Since her adoption, the beagle has carved out something of a celebrity career in her own right. She has made cameo appearances on Meghan's Netflix lifestyle programme, With Love, Meghan, and has featured regularly in Instagram content promoting the Duchess's As Ever brand.

Last March, Mia memorably gatecrashed an outdoor photoshoot for the brand's inaugural launch, with Meghan sharing a behind-the-scenes photograph of the beagle demanding attention amid the carefully arranged products.
