Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank welcomed a baby girl on Monday evening at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, making the newborn just the third member of the British Royal Family to arrive on foreign soil in over a hundred years.
The infant, weighing 6 pounds 9 ounces, was delivered at 6.20pm local time.
Buckingham Palace confirmed the news on Tuesday, stating: "Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, born on Monday, 3rd August 2026, at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal."
The Palace added: "Their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of the royal family were delighted to be informed of the news."
The couple's daughter joins a very small group of royals born outside Britain in recent memory.
Her second cousin Princess Lilibet of Sussex arrived at a hospital in Santa Barbara, California, in June 2021, following the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's departure from senior royal duties the previous year.
Maud Windsor, born in Los Angeles in 2013 to Lord Frederick Windsor and Sophie Winkleman, represents another rare overseas arrival.
She was the first grandchild of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and holds 56th place in the succession.
Before these two cases, historians must look back more than a century to find a comparable example — the birth of Prince Philip on the Greek island of Corfu in 1921.
The newborn occupies 15th place in the line of succession to the throne, pushing her great-uncle Prince Edward down to 16th. She will not carry the title of HRH.
She is also the 15th great-grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and notably the third to be born since the monarch's passing in 2022.
For Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson, the former Duke and Duchess of York, the arrival marks their fifth grandchild.
Their most recent grandchild before this was Athena Mapelli Mozzi, daughter of Princess Beatrice, who was born in January last year.
The baby joins her older siblings, Eugenie and Brooksbank's sons August and Ernest, as the couple's third child.
Given that Eugenie and Brooksbank maintain a home and other ties to Portugal, their daughter may be eligible for Portuguese citizenship in five years.
The couple are understood to be deeply thankful to the medical team who looked after them.
A name for the baby has yet to be chosen, with the parents taking their time while settling in as a family of five.
Eugenie first revealed the pregnancy in May, posting an Instagram photograph of her sons, August in a grey long-sleeved top and Ernest sporting a Chelsea kit, proudly displaying a baby scan image.
