Starmer hailed England's stunning victory

Outgoing Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has celebrated England's incredible 3-2 win against Mexico, which saw them book a spot in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

Goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane helped the Three Lions secure one of their most memorable victories in recent memory.

Taking to social media, Starmer wrote: "One of the greatest England matches I've ever seen.

"We are through to the quarter-finals!"

The Prime Minister's comments came shortly after full-time, as he joined several other England fans who stayed up all night for the game.

There will be several tired and sore heads this morning, with goalscorer Bellingham telling supporters to "call in sick".

Asked what message he had for fans back home, Bellingham said: "Have another shot and text your bosses to say you're not coming in tomorrow. That's about it.

"My god, if you can't enjoy a night like this, just for one night, then I don't know what it's worth."

The 23-year-old also admitted he could only imagine the scenes unfolding across England as supporters celebrated deep into Monday morning.

He said: "I can imagine it's carnage.

"No matter where you're from or what you do I can imagine everyone is together.

"That is the thing I dream of, being a part of this England squad, bringing my country together, giving them nights like this that they will enjoy for many years to come.

"I am so proud of this team. What we have done tonight is spectacular."

Bellingham's brilliant brace helped lay the foundations for England's famous victory, with Kane also finding the net from the penalty spot as the Three Lions overcame the challenge of playing more than 40 minutes with 10 men after Jarell Quansah's dismissal.

Despite the euphoria, Bellingham insisted England cannot afford to get carried away ahead of a mouth-watering quarter-final showdown with Norway in Miami on Saturday.

He said: "It is still one game at a time. At the end of the day it is just a round of 16 win.

"The quarter-final, Norway pose a different threat, some that we know really well, some world-class players in there, so we will have to be ready."

Bellingham also admitted he relished playing at the Azteca Stadium for the first time.

He added: "The atmosphere was by far the best I have played against in international football. This country as a footballing country is magnificent.

"The reception we had coming off the plane, although it was hostile, it was beautiful to see how passionate one country can be about their team."
