Want the ultimate Wi-Fi setup to power your streaming and smart home devices? TP-Link just unveiled the world's first Wi-Fi 8 broadband system at the IFA technology showcase in Berlin, and it might be exactly what you need.
Powering this new lineup are a pair of flagship devices — the TP-Link Archer 8 Ultra Wi-Fi router and the Deco 8 Ultra mesh system. The new devices prioritise rock-solid reliability instead of chasing ever-higher speeds.
While you might not notice a dramatic uptick in speeds compared to Wi-Fi 7, the incoming Wi-Fi 8 system hopes to tackle problems you actually notice day-to-day. Think dead zones lurking in the far corners of your home, slowdowns when everyone's devices are fighting for bandwidth, and those frustrating dropouts due to interference.
TP-Link has developed something known as the Wi-Fi 8 StabilityEngine, which bundles together several clever technologies to iron-out these common issues, handle many simultaneous devices, and reduce interference.
The Archer 8 Ultra handles wireless speeds of up to 19 gigabits per second across its three frequency bands - that's 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz working together. To do this, the Wi-Fi router squeezes in an incredible 18 internal antennas and offers wired connections up to 10 gigabits per second.
For its part, TP-Link's Deco 8 Ultra pushes wireless speeds up to 22 gigabits per second, though this varies depending on where you live due to local regulations. A three-pack system blankets up to 9,800 square feet and can handle more than 200 devices simultaneously.
Both offer the same lightning-fast 10-gigabit wired connections too.
There's a reason both devices look rather different from your typical router. TP-Link reckons most people hide their networking kit away because it's ugly, which actually hurts performance.
To swerve this issue, Archer 8 Ultra sports a minimalist look with a dual-tone grille that catches the light differently depending on the angle. Instead of the usual clutter of bright LEDs, you get a subtle glow showing its status.
Gary Chang, Lead Industrial Designer at TP-Link, explained the thinking: "We stopped building a piece of networking equipment and started designing for the home. When a router's design becomes something people want to display, it ends up exactly where it performs best."
If you're keen to get your hands on these devices, pre-orders for the Archer 8 Ultra open on September 30, while the Deco 8 mesh system follows early next year. TP-Link will expand its new lineup further with the Roam 8 travel router, plus additional range extenders and adapters next year. Pricing hasn't been revealed yet.
