The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are returning to Britain and sending their children to a school in England

Andy Burnham has washed his hands of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle amid their ongoing security issue ahead of their move back to the UK.

On Wednesday evening, it was announced that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would be returning to Britain and enrolling Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet in an English school.

The new Prime Minister was asked about Harry and Meghan's security, and whether the Labour Government would step in to assist the couple.

He stated: "This is a private matter; it’s a matter for Harry and Meghan, and we wish them well in the move that they’re making."

Mr Burnham was asked by reporters on a visit to West Yorkshire whether the Government would establish and fund the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's security.

Harry and Meghan will not receive any money from the public purse while back in the UK, it has been revealed.

Prince Archie, who is seven years old, will be enrolled in Year 3.

The royal children both previously attended school in California before Harry and Meghan's decision to relocate to Britain.

It has not been revealed which school Archie and Lilibet will attend or where they will be based, due to privacy and security reasons.

In May 2025, Prince Harry lost his High Court legal challenge to have his high-level police protection automatically reinstated.

In June 2026, the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures rejected a formal request for taxpayer-funded police security for the family's summer visit.

LATEST ROYAL DEVELOPMENTS

Prince Harry has repeatedly argued that private security teams are not sufficient on British soil.

King Charles is understood to have welcomed his younger son's decision to return to England with his family.

However, the Sussexes will not resume their roles as working royals.

Harry and Meghan quit their public-facing royal positions in January 2020, and left the UK two months later.

They briefly moved to Canada before settling in Montecito, California.

The Duchess of Sussex subsequently launched a lifestyle brand, As ever, while the Duke of Sussex focused mainly on charitable endeavours.

Despite moving back to the UK, it is understood to the couple will retain their Montecito home and their Portuguese summer house.
