The Three Lions won 3-2 to reach the last eight of the tournament

Joe Hart has criticised Thomas Tuchel after the England boss took aim at referee Alireza Faghani following the Three Lions' 3-2 win over Mexico at the Azteca in the early hours of Monday morning.

Harry Kane's winning penalty and a brace from Jude Bellingham helped them fight their way through, despite playing with 10 men for 40 minutes following a red card for Jarell Quansah.

But Faghani has drawn criticism for how he officiated the match, with Mexico winning a late penalty in controversial circumstances.

While Tuchel praised England for winning in such a difficult atmosphere, he was unhappy with how the contest was managed.

"It's just not good enough. The referees are just not good enough, fourth officials are just not good enough," he said.

"That's the bottom line. Three people in the VAR from South America in a match like this, if this is correct, VAR overturns... is this a clear and obvious error for the penalty? For sure not.

"They overturned a situation where he doesn't even give a foul. Referees just not good enough, fourth officials just not good enough."

But Hart has suggested Tuchel was wrong to focus on the officiating given England had produced such a terrific defensive performance.

"I think he has got that wrong," the BBC pundit said.

"I don't know why he has gone so hard on that after such an impressive performance.

"I get it, against all the odds the red card and the penalties, but I don't think they were borderline decisions.

"I thought they were decent decisions in the end."

Tuchel did make it clear he was proud of his players, who refused to buckle despite facing large periods of the closing stages without the ball.

He stated: "If a team has heart and belief, then it's this team. They did it on pure will. No words. That's an iconic match, an iconic stadium. We overcame so much adversity today. Very proud.

"I didn't feel it hostile, I found it more cheering and emotional. We were aware of that but we refused to give in on a level that is absolutely admirable."

Next up for England is a crunch clash with Norway.

Erling Haaland has seven goals from just four games and blasted them past Brazil earlier in the night.

Tuchel feels England must improve if they're to reach the last four.

"I think we can play much better. There's a lot we can do better," he insisted.

"There's still a disconnect to what we actually put on the pitch in terms of football performance, ball possession, finding spaces.

"There's no disconnect in committing and doing what is needed to overcome anything that is thrown to this team."
