Britons have just unlocked a new way to access Alexa+ — Amazon's revamped chatty AI assistant.
Alexa+ can now be used directly in your web browser via alexa.com. That means you don't need one of Amazon's home devices, such as an Echo speaker, or even the mobile app, to chat with it.
For those who missed the announcement for US-based Echo owners last year, Alexa+ is designed to be a massive boost to Amazon's iconic voice assistant, fuelled by generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) smarts to handle more complex tasks and make conversations feel more natural. The enhanced system also lets you ask follow-up questions without repeating "Alexa," and even interrupt mid-answer with a clarification.
This is a fundamental shift from the classic command-and-response model that we've all become accustomed to over the last decade, since Alexa arrived on UK shores, into a more intuitive, conversational experience. You won't need to learn how to speak to Alexa anymore... the chatty AI should be able to understand whatever you're asking.
Amazon wrote in a blog post: "People are finding incredible value in how AI can help in every aspect of their day, and to truly serve as a personal assistant, Alexa+ needs to be available wherever they are — at home, on their phone, and now on the web."
There are no browser-specific features with Alexa+ that you can't already access from your Echo or app, but it helps to have another outlet to access for convenience.
For instance, meal planning is one of the standout benefits. You can ask Alexa to put together a full week of breakfasts, lunches, and dinners tailored to your dietary needs — ranging from high-protein, low-sugar, or school-friendly packed lunches. It'll even pop everything you need into your Amazon Fresh basket, ready to order. This is ideal if you have a busy schedule and need a household chore to literally be taken off your hands.
Smart home controls sit right alongside your chat window too, so you can check your security cameras, adjust the heating, or let someone in through the front door without switching apps.
Beyond that, it's meant to handle calendar updates, to-do lists, restaurant bookings, homework help, and even curating film recommendations for movie night — just like it would on your Echo.
And one of the really great things about Alexa.com is that it's designed to remember everything across your devices. That means if you start a conversation on your Echo speaker at home, you can pick it right back up in your browser at work — and vice versa.
Amazon has also recently redesigned its Alexa mobile app with a more AI-focused layout, so between your phone, computer, and Echo devices, you can move between them without losing your thread.
You can even pull up recent chats from the browser to continue where you left off.
The good news for Amazon Prime members is that Alexa+ comes bundled with their subscription at no additional cost. If you've already got access to the upgraded assistant, you can start using the browser version straight away.
For now, though, the service is currently open to those on the Alexa+ Early Access programme, who can head straight to alexa.com and start typing requests from any browser, whether that's Chrome, Safari, or anything else.
To join the programme, you either already need to own a compatible Echo device or purchase one online.
The company also hinted there's plenty more on the horizon, with new features, partnerships, and experiences in the pipeline.
